Ophelia

Give the woman her flowers. 

It feels unfair, doesn’t it? The sacrifices a woman must make to tell a story that is not her own. Even Elizabeth Siddal, the model for the first and famous painting of Ophelia by John Everett Millais, got so sick posing for him in a cold bathtub she nearly died.

Yet so often when we are angry at such treatment, we are called the crazy and unreasonable ones. Mad becomes mad. And when we do focus on our own stories, we are seen as selfish. As villains. 

The thing is, we will always be a villain in someone else’s story anyway. So we may as well be firm in our boundaries and express when we’re unhappy, because that lets us be a hero for ourselves in our own story.

I wish for you to get mad and be mad when you know you’ve been wronged. Because you deserve to be treated well. To be treated beautifully.
